I wish for the world its wounds to heal That soon we feel as one I wish for the world, for eyes to meet Our hearts to beat as one Build a life worth living Where forgiveness is for giving And banishment forbidden For kindness is our mission I wish for the world It’s so easy to get downhearted Trouble everywhere you look But we have to finish what we started Write a different ending to the book It‘s so easy to feel defeated When the day ain‘t even started yet Many dreams still need to be completed Many promises we can‘t forget You may not have gone the farthest But far enough to see the light You may not have caused the darkness But it‘s up to you to make it bright Any wishing star that comes to light Wish for things to turn out right That everyone has what they need So when they try their dreams succeed For sun to shine and rain to fall May thoughts be kind, wish love for all You may not have gone the farthest But far enough to see the light You may not have caused the darkness But it‘s up to you to make it bright Be the wishing star that comes to light Work for things to turn out right So everyone has what they need And when they try their dreams succeed For sun to shine and rain to fall Let thoughts be kind, show love for all Starlight, star bright First star I see tonight Wish I may, wish I might Have the wish I wish tonight

Silent, still, to survive Words in my mouth I cannot speak I ache to go, I yearn to thrive Through these tired eyes The path looks steep But I’m still alive No one here but me I’ll do this on my own Maybe fly away I save myself What came before I cannot say I carry with me loss and lack A life that’s left in disarray A journey on an endless track Trudge it every day... Can I sit and hold my past a while? Can I feel and not succumb? Can I look into this open wound Or just keep existing, tethered, numb Can I process pain, begin to trust In the person I’ve become?
3.
A corridor of tiny rooms Vespers floating up the stairs Hearts that beat within a womb Loneliness has its own prayers We are on the edge of shame We are told what’s right and wrong When we let conscience decide In the end, the shame is gone A lock of hair kept in a box Time didn’t mend - time has been cruel Her voice still wavers when she talks It wasn’t her who made the rules Nothing hurts my heart as much As when you cannot meet my eye It’s all of us who have done you wrong Looking back, we question why
4.
You stifle, I cannot breathe easy You use me, I can find no rest You want to walk this line beside me? Tread lightly, tread lightly... I am the rolling sea, you are the heavy stone This is the highest tide that I have ever known I wish you’d treasure what we have here There’s only so much I can take I love you, still I need to warn you Tread lightly, tread lightly...
5.
Oh the people would gamble Their own wife and children Oh the people, indiscreet Vivid dreams of velvet riches Cloaking all that’s incomplete Penny arcade A fantasy that keeps on fading Fifty to one, look at them all lined up The girls in fur coats Stuck in Travolta Falls and Always leave them wanting more Vacant eyes in empty faces Tired fingers feed machines
6.
Small, yet heavy Form unsteady Not quite ready, lacking voice Strains and stresses Silence presses Heavy burden, weighty choice It only takes a silence To sense no one has seen us To stand by and do nothing When tragedies begin It only takes a silence To build a wall between us A moment of inaction And then divisions win Jo mie kaik’ virret unohi Kaik mie laulut lakkaelin Hiljaa, hiljaa nuohinainen Hiljaa, hiljaa hiitelästi [The Finnish text could be translated as follows: I’ve forgotten all the hymns I’ve stopped singing all the songs Quiet, quiet young woman Quiet, quiet quietly] Fretful, guilty Cannot un-see Bystander regrets abound Be the ones who Rise, speak out to Lift each other, make a sound If we can break the silence We’ll know that they have seen us We’ll rise up and do something When tragedies begin If we can break the silence No walls will come between us United voices gaining traction Division cannot win
7.
When the inferno rises Let him drink the nectar, the sap When the tree withers He howls to the sky his distress When the empty sea collapses That the blackened waste makes her drunk The wind whispers its pain The color of an ebony black Blow blow, wind of madness Breath breath, on my land Breath, blow on my sea Breath, on our lives I want to see my sky again Take him in my arms Get drunk on his honey His name like a mantra You are beautiful my land You are tender my sea I want you as a lover Like you were before
8.
You, you are my roof And my cornerstone You are the proof I am not alone You explain me Teach me where I’m from Entertain me Help me to belong You sustain me... You, you are my hope When I feel confused You help me cope When I’m sad and bruised Just one more before bed Calm all the mess in my head And we can pretend Things work out in the end Weave and mend and darn Each fable and yarn You, you lift my mood Help me make a plan You do me good Do the best you can
9.
I dream we learn to fly No more you and I Freely flutter No tears from the sky We yield like water Water’s strong Flow like water And know we belong Release anxiety Nature leads the way Accepting quietly All life’s disarray This carefree spirit Finds delight Feels compassion Love taking flight I dream we’re everything No more them and us Simply living Happy emptiness
10.
An open door, a cup of tea I sit down and you sit with me A touch to reassure It’s a mountain, not a contour Leave be, though broken No words need spoken Just listening Not much to look upon A moment, then it’s gone A space to hold To let unfold Not a great grand gesture No shining armour No final answer
11.
Deadlines loom across the town People packed in airless rooms Something crashes, heads stay down Far away, a poppy blooms Far away, a poppy... Headlights swarming in the sound Windows glitter in the distance Whisper pink, feel the ground Far away from blissful ignorance Far away from blissful... Aching to be home, to be held Aching to be home, to be held I’ll keep to my myself And find a quiet corner to drown it out An unforgiving floor Beside the scarf left behind And yesterday’s headlines Can’t reach you, wish you were near Aching to be home, to be held Can’t reach you, wish you were near Aching to be home, to be held
12.
As if somehow they’d kept him safe They fastened it with two small locks Three letters, and a sketch he’d made They sent his things home in a box She builds a box inside her head She packs herself up safe within No violation touches now No desecration counts as sin Time moves fast in the long run, don’t it Time moves fast in the long run Time moves fast in the long run, don’t it Time moves fast in the long run Bodies float upon the sea That once hoped for a better life Human, just like you and me Daughter, father, brother, wife Another sacrifice to war Collateral, a little child They laid her in a tiny box Another life destroyed, defiled It’s not enough to ask the question When will these horrors cease? Boxes pile up all around us ’Til we commit to peace Come rest a while Beyond the pain and fear Find warmth and comfort here

about

I’m excited to share my new collaborative songwriting project, CONSEQUENCES, with you!

At a time when COVID-19 made most of "normal working life" stop for songwriters and musicians, I undertook a year-long project, with support from Creative Scotland, collaborating remotely with 12 songwriters I admired from Scotland and around the world, and recording each song, one per month, to make this album. I greatly valued the opportunity to connect with others and have a creative focus at a time when real life connections weren't possible. I also hope that the songs will open up conversations about how we live, and provide moments of reflection on human behaviour and its personal, social and environmental consequences.

I'll be launching the album with a concert at Celtic Connections on 2nd February 2023, featuring many of the songwriting collaborators as well as the full creative team behind the recordings.

I’m passionate about songwriting; I love the way that words and music can interact to tell stories that open hearts and minds, and build empathy. They can also prompt reflection on, and conversations around, difficult subjects. And there’s a powerful sense of solace that comes from hearing songs which let us know we are not alone in our experiences, whatever they may be – I hope that you might find this with some of these songs, too.

The songwriters were revealed on a monthly basis and the methods of each collaboration were uniquely devised between myself and my fellow songwriters, and mindful of COVID-19 safety and environmental impact. Now that the project's complete, the 12 songs have added up to an album of work, which will be officially released on 3.2.23. I'm able to share with you, here on BandCamp, the songs themselves, as well as the lyrics, and reflections on the collaborative songwriting process, too, which I hope might be of interest to you!

THE CREATIVE TEAM
This was an ambitious project, collaborating for the first time with twelve songwriters around the world, to a fairly tight timescale, given the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Writing, arranging, recording and then sharing a new song every month was a particular challenge that I’ve never attempted before! However, I was not alone: there’s a fantastic creative team who have supported me to record and produce the songs and the final album, along with accompanying artwork and music videos. These talents include Mattie Foulds (producer and drummer), Kevin McGuire (bass), Mikey Owers (brass/guitars/vocals), Gillian Gamble (illustration for album artwork), and Louise Mather (film). My eternal gratitude to them for bringing their magic to the project!
