about

Amnesty International published shocking statistics a few years ago - at that time, there were 250,000 child soldiers in the world. One third of child soldiers are female, and therefore likely to be forced to be sex slaves for commanders. Ishmael Beah, a former child soldier in Sierra Leone, spoke of the persistent compassion of aid workers in the face of continuing violence from himself and other ex-soldiers, and his need to forgive himself for what he had done and to forgive those who had pushed him into it.

lyrics

Bodies bruise the landscape,
Hard bullets beat down
Callous men who command rape
In my arms

I almost remember mother’s arms, before
Swaddled by my innocence no more

And would she think I’ve earned my wings?
Would it be fair to rise above
What I’ve become?
Is solace found there?
In my arms, in my arms

They won’t recognise me,
I’m a long way gone
These horrors disguise me
In my arms, in my arms

Cradling a weapon, empty at the core
Swaddled by my innocence no more
